“It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”
As-Sarawaki, 22 June 2007: Alhamdulillah, this entry titled “Food for Thought, Lesson to Learn” is my fourth entry in English after Good or Bad, Hard to Say!, Purpose of Life (Erti Hidup) and This Is Islam.. Beautiful Way Of Life, Perfect Way To Live. Maybe this entry also serves as a response to a visitor who silently and anonymously been reading most of my entries and she personally requested more entries in English.
The wisdom of life consists in elimination of non-essentials. The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in which direction we are moving. Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him once said: “Value the worth of five things before they are replaced by the other five conditions: value your youthfulness before old age arrives, value health before sickness strikes, value your wealth before you become needy, value peacefulness before hardship comes, and value life before death arrives.”
In almost every moment of the day, we find ourselves being confronted with questions and opportunities. Our lives are a constant flow of decisions. What will I eat? What will I wear? Where will I go? Whom will I go with? What will I do? What will I buy? Where will I live? Life is always asking us questions. Often they seem small and insignificant, but in truth they can give significant impact to our lives. We have options.. We choose between various options a hundred times a day, and our choices impact our credibility, happiness, health, well-being, and destiny. So, always bear in mind.. Making a right decision is a might and it is crucial! Thus, make sure that every decision we make will bring rejoice for us in this wordly life and more importantly in the Hereafter.
Here are very interesting, wise and full of thoughts slide shows about “Packet of Biscuits” which is taken from a poem titled ‘The Cookie Thief‘ by Valerie Cox in 1996 for us to think about. These slide shows reminded me about words of wisdom which says, “If the pearl tell the oyster it is nothing, then a fish can tell the sky to stop raining”. ‘Ala kulli hal.. Hopefully you will find it beneficial.
“Life is too short, so make it worth!”
Hence in this School of Life, please always remember that there are five things that we cannot recover:
1. The word… after it’s said!
2. The stone… after the throw!
3. The occasion… after the loss!
4. The time… after it’s gone!
5. The life… after we died!
Allah The Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an, Surah Ar-Ruum, verse 33-34, “When affliction touches people, they pray to their Lord, turning to God repentant; but then when God allows them a taste of divine mercy, a segment of them attribute partners to their Lord, in effect ungrateful for what We have given them. So enjoy yourselves for a while, for you will soon know.”
Allah SWT also says in the same surah, verse 36, “Whenever We let people taste mercy, they are glad of it, but when ill they have brought on themselves hits them, then they despondent.”
Finally, I’m more than happy and it is my pleasure to share a quote from Rabi’atul Adawiyah as a guidance for us in struggling and pursuing life:
“You talk about loving God while you disobey Him; I swear by my life that this is something very strange. If you were true in your love, you would obey Him, for a lover obeys whom he loves!”
Wallahu a’la wa a’lam.
